DESCRIPTION:Melrose Abbey is the new name of the wedding event business at 3931 Washington\, the former Broadway Baptist Church. The current owners got a special use permit from the city in 2022 to operate as a wedding and event venue with four on-site hotel rooms.  They are now applying for that special use permit to be renewed. The owners are required to have a public meeting to gather input. That meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on March 22 in person at the Plaza library or via zoom. \nAfter the public meeting\, the City Plan Commission will hold a hearing on the special use permit on April 2 and the Board of Zoning Adjustment will consider it on April 9. SUMMARY:St. Patrick’s Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:St. Patrick’s Day is a big event in Valentine. Since 2019\, the parade has been held in Midtown\, starting at Linwood and Broadway and going south along Broadway to 43rd Street. According to the parade committee\, “The area around Redemptorist Catholic Church where the parade starts was traditionally called Kerry Patch in the 1800s after the large Irish immigrant population living there. Many of the stone buildings in the neighborhood were built by Irish with limestone quarried by Irish in the Penn Valley Park area.” \nValentine residents need to be aware that no parking will be enforced along the parade route starting at 5 a.m. on the 17th. Police will begin ticketing and towing vehicles off the route at that time. The entire route will begin closing on March 17th starting at 8 a.m. from the south section of Broadway moving north to 31st street. \nThe parade goes on\, rain\, snow\, or shine\, as logn as the parade committee feels it is safe. \nMore details about the route and preparing for the parade are on the committee’s website.

SUMMARY:Luminaria creating and lighting
DESCRIPTION:It has been a longtime holiday tradition for Valentine and the surrounding neighborhoods to prepare luminaria on Christmas Eve. These are candles placed in paper bags and lit at sunset\, to line the streets and create a festive atmosphere on the night before Christmas. \nHowever\, it is a lot of work to prepare the luminaria and they are expensive. Since very few people participated in the preparation last year\, the board voted to discontinue the tradition UNLESS someone or several people come forward to take responsibility for putting the bags together\, distributing them and lighting them. \nWe do still have candles and other necessary components left over from last year\, so we are planning to assemble the luminaria possible for the last time on Christmas Eve\, Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. We have not yet chosen a location\, but add this to your calendar and watch this newsletter for updates. \nWe will be gathering at 1 p.m. on December 24th to prepare bags for the Christmas Luminaria. The location will be communicated closer to the date. \nAlso note that the number of candles that get placed around the neighborhood is contingent upon the number of people who volunteer to help. IN other words\, if you want to make sure there are luminaria in front of your house\, you should show up to help.

SUMMARY:38th and Washington Task Force meeting
DESCRIPTION:On July 12\, the Valentine Neighborhood 38th and Washington Task Force invited residents\, businesses\, safety agencies and others to its initial meeting. The task force\, headed by Cheryl Baird\, Chris Jordan and Mary Jo Draper\, was convened after Valentine residents expressed concerns about loitering in driveways\, suspected drug dealing\, and the suspected overdose death on a Valentine sidewalk that occurred on July 9. We invited businesses owners on Broadway\, the police department\, codes inspectors and the Broadway CID security team to help us understand what is going on and find solutions. Here’s a brief recap of the meeting: \n\nAbout 15 Valentine residents talked about issues they are seeing\, with several saying the level of drug activity\, people squatting in vacant homes\, people loitering in yards and driveways\, and people with mental health issues in the neighborhood has increased over the past eight months. Several said the level of disorder has become unacceptable. Residents talked about the need for compassion for unhoused and mentally ill people. They also expressed concern for residents around 38th and Washington\, which appears to be the epicenter of problem\, some of whom are afraid to go out of their homes.\n\n\nSeveral Broadway business owners and representatives of institutions along Broadway said that the same groups of folks who have been congregating daily at 38th and Washington frequent  parking lots and other areas on Broadway\, and are also making staff feel unsafe and requiring them in some cases to provide armed security.\n\n\nThe director of security for the Broadway CID\, a representatives of the Kansas City Police Department and our local codes inspector offered their perspective and some initial ideas for solutions. They stressed the need for residents to report problems to the police and the city and suggested we let our city council representatives know we need help in dealing with these things.\n\nA second meeting\, to be focused on developing a strategy\, is to be held Wednesday\, July 26 at 5 p.m. at Midtown KC Now\, 3931 Main Street. (Please park in the lot on Walnut Street\, accessible from 39th and 40th Streets.) If you cannot attend but would like to receive updates on the results of the meeting and plans for the future\, please contact Mary Jo Draper\, Valentine Neighborhood secretary at maryjo@drapercom.com.
