SUMMARY:38th and Washington Task Force meeting
DESCRIPTION:On July 12\, the Valentine Neighborhood 38th and Washington Task Force invited residents\, businesses\, safety agencies and others to its initial meeting. The task force\, headed by Cheryl Baird\, Chris Jordan and Mary Jo Draper\, was convened after Valentine residents expressed concerns about loitering in driveways\, suspected drug dealing\, and the suspected overdose death on a Valentine sidewalk that occurred on July 9. We invited businesses owners on Broadway\, the police department\, codes inspectors and the Broadway CID security team to help us understand what is going on and find solutions. Here’s a brief recap of the meeting: \n\nAbout 15 Valentine residents talked about issues they are seeing\, with several saying the level of drug activity\, people squatting in vacant homes\, people loitering in yards and driveways\, and people with mental health issues in the neighborhood has increased over the past eight months. Several said the level of disorder has become unacceptable. Residents talked about the need for compassion for unhoused and mentally ill people. They also expressed concern for residents around 38th and Washington\, which appears to be the epicenter of problem\, some of whom are afraid to go out of their homes.\n\n\nSeveral Broadway business owners and representatives of institutions along Broadway said that the same groups of folks who have been congregating daily at 38th and Washington frequent  parking lots and other areas on Broadway\, and are also making staff feel unsafe and requiring them in some cases to provide armed security.\n\n\nThe director of security for the Broadway CID\, a representatives of the Kansas City Police Department and our local codes inspector offered their perspective and some initial ideas for solutions. They stressed the need for residents to report problems to the police and the city and suggested we let our city council representatives know we need help in dealing with these things.\n\nA second meeting\, to be focused on developing a strategy\, is to be held Wednesday\, July 26 at 5 p.m. at Midtown KC Now\, 3931 Main Street. SUMMARY:Roanoke Park cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Roanoke Park is looking better and better thanks to the crews of volunteers who have been clearing out bush honeysuckle. This month Scott Burnett’s crew plans to clear out the slope north of Madison. The efforts are part of the Roanoke Park Conservancy\, a nonprofit that advocates for completion of the park master plan. It is made up of a core of interested neighbors and volunteers who have slowly been clearing out invasive plants and bringing the park back to its original splendor.  Meet at Madison Ave\, east of Karnes Playground.

For the parade\, we encourage everyone\, especially kids\, to dress up. And feel free to bring your dog in its favourite costume! \nParade route: Starting at Jefferson just north of Valentine Road; turn east on Valentine; turn south on Pennsylvania; turn west on 38th Street. SUMMARY:Meeting on Request for Short-Term Rental at 3608 Jefferson
DESCRIPTION:The owner of the home at 3608 Jefferson has requested a meeting with the Valentine Neighborhood to request our approval to use the home as a short-term rental. Under Kansas City rules\, a property owner can ask for a special use permit if that owner does notobtain the approval from 55 percent of adjacent property owners to operate the short-term rental. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter meeting with the neighborhood\, the owner will need to appear before the city Plan Commission\, which will make a recommendation on whether or not the permit should be issued. That recommendation then goes to the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) which makes the final decision. \nAt the meeting on April 26 at 6:30 p.m.\, the property owner\, Jordan Grove\, will have 10 minutes to present his argument for why the special use permit should be granted. Those VNA members who want to have input into the decision will then discuss the issue and take a vote. Based upon that vote\, the neighborhood will testify at the hearings before the Plan Commission and the BZA. \nThe meeting will be held at Penn Valley at our regular meeting location just before the general meeting on August 26.

SUMMARY:Westport St. Patrick's Day Run
DESCRIPTION:The Westport St. Patrick’s Day Run will be making its way through Valentine on Saturday\, March 11. Race events begin at 9:45 a.m. with a post-race festival scheduled for 10:20 a.m. at the finish line in Westport. The race goes up Pennsylvania to Penn Valley Park and back down Jefferson\, so there will be some street closures. It’s a great opportunity to cheer on the runners and even have a little party as the race passes through. \nMap of the course

The agenda includes: \n\n\n\n\nThe Westport Regional Business League: (WRBL) provides security\, maintains beautification and promotes special events for the common business interest of its members. Since the Westport district is adjacent to our neighborhood\, it is important to work with Westport on common issues. Executive Director Franklin Kimbrough will join us to talk about the current focus of the group and will take questions from VNA residents.\n\n\n\nPorchfest Returns to Valentine: Katheryn Golden\, the producer of Porchfest\, would like to bring the event back to Valentine this year. She’ll join us  with early planning for the event and how the neighbourhood can get involved.\n\n\n\nRevised Budget: The VNA board will present a revised budget for the year and after discussion\, VNA members will vote on the budget. SUMMARY:Valentine's Cocktail Party
DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day is a big day in the neighborhood. We like to find a way to get together with our neighbors for a little fun. This year\, we’ll be gathering at an exciting new venue in the neighborhood\, Post Coffee. This was previously Monarch Coffee at 3550 Broadway. We’ll be on the main floor and the shop will be open just for our party. There will be a barista available for our coffee needs\, and the neighborhood association will also supply wine\, champagne and a signature cocktail plus some light appetizers. \nWe hope to see lots of old friends and even more new ones! \nWe also give out the annual Love Award\, which honors someone who has been a great friend to Valentine. This year we will celebrate City Councilwoman Katheryn Shields who has done much to help Valentine during her years in office. \nIt’s also the date when dues are due. \nThe party is planned for the cocktail hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, so if you are making dinner plans for Valentine’s Day\, you can join us first. Kids are welcome.
