SUMMARY:Valentine's Cocktail Party
DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day is a big day in the neighborhood. We like to find a way to get together with our neighbors for a little fun. This year\, we’ll be gathering at an exciting new venue in the neighborhood\, Post Coffee. This was previously Monarch Coffee at 3550 Broadway. We’ll be on the main floor and the shop will be open just for our party. There will be a barista available for our coffee needs\, and the neighborhood association will also supply wine\, champagne and a signature cocktail plus some light appetizers. \nWe hope to see lots of old friends and even more new ones! \nWe also give out the annual Love Award\, which honors someone who has been a great friend to Valentine. This year we will celebrate City Councilwoman Katheryn Shields who has done much to help Valentine during her years in office. \nIt’s also the date when dues are due. \nThe party is planned for the cocktail hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, so if you are making dinner plans for Valentine’s Day\, you can join us first. Kids are welcome.

SUMMARY:Luminaria Lighting Party
DESCRIPTION:We hope you have put our annual luminaria assembly and lighting on your holiday calendar. For folks who are new to the neighborhood\, it is a long-standing tradition for Valentine and several surrounding neighborhoods to assemble luminaria and to line the streets with them on Christmas Eve. We get together for a party to put the candles in the bags of sand and then go back out at sunset to light them. Then\, while you wait for Santa to come\, you can stroll around the neighborhood which is lit by a festive glow. Here are the details if you can participate: \n\nWe’ll get together at 2 p.m. to assemble the luminaria at the home of Dana and Patti Meier\, 629 W. 39th Terrace\n\nPark on the street and walk down the gravel driveway to the assembly area\, in the garage\nAssembly will take place in the garage\, which offers some cover from the weather\nBring gloves and small tools for scooping sand\nFood and drink will be provided\, but you are welcome to bring your own favorites\nYes\, we know there is a Chiefs game at noon. We’ll have a tv showing the game available during assembly\n\n\nWe’ll then light the candles at sunset and enjoy the glow\n\nWe could use several people with pickup trucks to help us distribute the luminaria after they are assembled\n\n\nOther neighborhoods including Roanoke also put out luminaria so you might want to make it part of your tradition to take a stroll on Christmas Eve.\n\nLuminaria Party Hosted by Dana and Patti Meier629 W. 39th TerraceDec. 24\, 2 p.m.

SUMMARY:General meeting; Vote on National Register of Historic Places
DESCRIPTION:Valentine residents have spent the past several years gathering information for a historic survey of the neighborhood. The survey records the date of construction\, early residents (when known) and history of every structure within the area. It also describes the creation of the neighborhood and how it changed over the years. The data has been submitted to the city Preservation Office. On Sept. 7\,  the city’s historic preservation officer\, Brad Wolf\, presented it to the neighborhood. \nThe survey report and forms are on a google drive you can access.\nhttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sRsUKNhwBTAr3ra9P6OMouNZHmxlfxH-?usp=sharing \nAll Valentine residents were invited to the meeting to view the survey results and learn more about what it means to be on either the National Historical Register or the local historic register. The consensus of those attending the meeting was that residents would like to proceed with putting the neighborhood on the National Register\, but we need more time to consider whether we want to apply to be on the local register. The VNA board of directors met after the meeting and made the same recommendation. \nWolf explained that inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places does not require homeowners to go before the Preservation Commission if they wish to do modifications\, paint or make other changes to their home. Some property owners within the district  may\, however\, be eligible for a state or federal investment tax credit on qualified rehabilitation expenses if their work conforms to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Building Rehabilitation. The program is intended to spotlight neighborhoods with significant history or cultural significance and to encourage owners to make improvements in their properties\, which may increase the value of all property within the district. \nHandout on the difference between national and local historical designation\nDetails on the state and federal tax credits \nBefore we go ahead with this action\, all interested residents of the neighborhood have a chance to express their views and vote. This vote will take place on Sept. 28 at the Valentine General Meeting. If you are at that meeting\, you have a chance to vote. If you cannot attend the meeting\, you may send your vote and any thoughts you have in advance to the Valentine board of directors by email at valentineneighborhood@gmail.com. \n\nThis is a preliminary step. State preservation officials must review the application for national historic designation and it is not guaranteed that our application will be accepted.\nAt this time\, we are only voting on applying to be a National Historic District. Being included in the Kansas City Historic Register requires approval for some changes from the Kansas City Historical Preservation Commission. We will have other opportunities to consider whether we want to go forward with seeking local designation and you will have a chance to learn more and voice your opinion.

SUMMARY:4th of July Parade and Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Fourth of July: The Celebration Returns\nValentine will hold a 4th of July parade and picnic on the 4th of July. If you are new to the neighborhood\, we have not held our neighborhood parade and picnic during the COVID years\, but we this year it is coming back\, hopefully bigger and better than ever. All Valentine residents are invited to attend\, including children and dogs. The parade starts at noon\, and features a chance to dress up for the holiday\, decorate your bike\, dress up your dog\, or just cheer the parade on from your front porch. That will be followed by a social hour; you are encouraged to bring your own refreshments or a picnic if you desire.\n\nHere are the details: \n\nMeet at noon for the parade. Assemble on Jefferson Street north of Valentine Road. The parade begins at noon so be there at least 10 minutes early if you plan to walk in the parade. Feel free to dress for the day – traditionally Uncle Sam has joined us\, and folks have often shown up in creative and elaborate costumes. Kids like to decorate their bikes for the holiday\, and some folks even decorate their dogs.\nThe parade route is this: Starting at Jefferson just north of Valentine Road; turn east on Valentine; turn south on Pennsylvania; turn west on 38th Street. The parade ends on the block of Jefferson between 37th and Valentine.\nNote: The block of Jefferson between 37th and Valentine will be closed off shortly before the parade and will reopen after the social hour has ended. \nStick around or come back for a picnic. At 1 p.m.  Following the parade\, we’ll hear from any elected officials who have joined us for the parade. You should bring a side dish to share and chairs if you need them. If your family and friends want to bring a picnic that is great. The neighborhood will supply the hamburgers and hotdogs and beverages (as long as they last). The neighborhood association will provide water\, and thanks in advance to Boulevard for contributing drinks.
